Gender Stereotypes

I was reading through the comments on gender stereotypes in the media on Nicholas' blog and I thought that the discussion was interesting. I feel that the advertisers managed to use these stereotypes effectively with humor to sell their products and just for fun, I searched "Gender Stereotypes" on youtube. This was what I got, so I thought I'd share it here. (Pardon the inappropriate thumbnail hahaha)

Recently, there is this case where two professional commentators, Andy Gray and Richard Keys, were sacked because they discriminated women. They spoke offensively about women and even made inappropriate comments directly to their female counterparts. Even though most of these comments were made off-air, the videos somehow surfaced online and this eventually resulted in the suspension of their contracts.

This serves as a reminder for men, myself included, that we should evaluate our comments before making any remarks on women, or for any other matter.

  1. With regards to the sacking of the commentators, I feel that the society and the media tend to play up situations where men make derogatory comments about women, whereas on many occasions women are allowed to make fun of men.

However I do feel that while it is good to make sure that such derogatory comments are not made to women, much still can be done about other issues such as judging the capabilities of women fairly and giving them the same pay as men who do the same amount of work. Stopping people from making discriminatory comments against women doesn't stop many men and even women from thinking that women are less able than men.

  2. We always measure one's ability according to one's career achievement.

How about one's ability to take care of people or ability to raise kids? All these contributions are always done behind the scene. In an economic driven society, forgeting about them makes the society think unhighly of women. :(

  3. it's undoubtedly true that advertisers use gender stereotypes to sell products. Whether this is "just for fun" or whether this practice has detrimental effects on society (e.g., perpetuating oppressive gender stereotypes) is a subject of debate.
